  1. Rita Ora 'will perform Avicii collaboration single Lonely Together at MTV's VMAs in tribute to the late DJ' four months on from his death at 28 In memory: Rita Ora is reportedly set to perform at MTV's Video Music Awards in tribute to her late friend and DJ Avicii, who died aged 28 on April 20. Speaking about the singer's previous tribute performances, the insider continued: 'She has spoken about him on stage while performing the song but she was thrilled when the VMAs said they would like her to do something at the ceremony.' 'Details have been kept secret but it will not be a straightforward performance', they added. MailOnline has contacted Rita's representatives for comment. Lonely Together - which was released in August last year - is nominated for the Dance Video and Visual Effects category, alongside the likes of Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa's One Kiss, and Ariana Grande's No Tears Left to Cry. Just a week after Avicii's death, Rita held a minute's silence in honour of her close friend during her performance at Netherlands' 538Koningsdag music festival. The blonde told the 40,000-strong crowd ahead of her performance: 'I'm going to say something which is really, really special because it's going to be hard for me to sing this next song and I'll tell you why. I had the honour of collaborating with somebody who changed my life and he's a really good friend of mine. I'm obviously talking about the incredible Avicii.'

  3. Rita Ora Apologizes After Mass Criticism for New Song Girls The singer came under fire amongst some members of the LGBTQI community for the false representation of bisexuality in her new song Girls. Rita Ora issued a public apology on Twitter explaining the premise of the song and the lyrics following a social media storm. In this post, Rita Ora, who hasnt ever publicly disclosed her sexual preference, essentially comes out. Note that the song, in particular, makes it very clear that Rita sings about her own experience in being with a woman and that does not necessarily resonate with everyone, as another Twitter user stated: Girls Rita Oras also featured Cardi B, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha, who all sing about their experiences in a way that points to these experiences being once off encounters fueled by just wanting to have fun. Whilst some praised the song for being a bisexual anthem, others spoke of it being problematic as it perpetuates queer stereotypes and furthermore plays into the microaggressions of a capitalist patriarchal society- where womens sexuality is made out to be a performance for the male gaze. One Twitter user made an informative thread regarding why: Bisexuality isnt a one-night thing. So to trivialise it as something youre doing just cos youre a little bit drunk and feel like kissing a girl is super damaging Openly queer musician and activist Hayley Kiyoko had her own opinion about the song saying that it a song like this just fuels the male gaze while marginalizing the idea of women loving womenI dont need to drink wine to kiss girls; Ive loved women my entire life. This type of message is dangerous because it completely belittles and invalidates the very pure feelings of an entire community. Another queer artist Kehlani said that the song contained awkward slurs which is possibly a testament to the fact that the songwriting team behind a song extolling the queer female experience was primarily male, according to Rolling Stone. Perhaps the takeout from this conversation is that in the age of freedom and fluidity, stars like Janelle Monae, who have found support and success in their publicly declared queerness(something that puts her in a minority group which faces daily violence) the question of queerness being a trendy commodity comes to light when mainstream media is involved. Mainstream, as we know it is what deems levels of acceptability and we need to be cognizant of what that may look because privilege is a real thing and rich, hyper-visible queer bodies dont necessarily take that into account with their art. However, as a consumer of music and a queer body, it is important to not shame other queer bodies for the way in which they choose to display their sexuality. Queerness does not have one look and perhaps Rita Oras experience is that of hookups at parties..and possibly more. Who is to judge? Creating a song about bisexuality means that Rita should have been aware that the term does not mean you 50% percent attracted to men and 50% attracted to women, but that like any other label, it exists as a spectrum. Furthermore, the inclusion of wine may perpetuate the false image which paints sexual experiences with queer people, for heterosexual people, more acceptable in the presence of alcohol, taking away both the agency of the non-queer person and the respect of the queer body, not as an experiment. In all honesty, the song falls a little flat in terms of production but here it is if you would like to listen to it What are your thoughts? http://www.elle.co.za/rita-ora-apologizes-mass-criticism-new-song-girls/
