19 September 2017

The UK's Official Chart 'millionaires' revealed The full list of just over 300 songs that have passed 1 million, when streams and sales are combined.

Reaching one million sales of a single in the UK is one of the greatest and rarest pop music milestones; and for the first time the Official Charts Company is redefining the established milestone to include streams.

Sam-Smith-2017-Facebook-Profile-Pic-671x

A little shy of five years since he made his chart debut as guest vocalist on Disclosure's Latch, Sam Smith has his sixth No.1, with Too Good At Goodbyes - from his upcoming second album - debuting atop the chart.

The 25-year-old's 12th hit in all, it is his sixth to reach No.1, and sold 61,685 copies last week (including 29,175 from sales-equivalent streams). It is Smith's first single since 2015, when Writing's On The Wall opened atop the list on sales of 69,604 copies, becoming the first ever James Bond theme (it's from the franchise's 24th film, Spectre) to reach No.1.

His best first week tally remains the 145,326 copies that his first No.1 - Naughty Boy collaboration La La La - sold on debut in 2013. His solo smash Stay With Me also opened north of 100,000 copies, selling 108,898 copies on debut in 2014. Both are among the three Smith tracks to sell upwards of a million copies (including sales equivalent-streams). Stay With Me's tally stands at 1,667,260 putting it ahead of La La La (1,328,518) with I'm Not The Only One (No.1 in 2014) also into seven digits, with sales of 1,110,507. Overall sales of Smith singles and tracks, with streaming included, added up to 10,138,561 before Too Good At Goodbyes was unleashed.

His debut album, In The Lonely Hour, surges 71-20 (3,078 sales) following the release of his new single, raising its cumulative sales to 2,330,627. Smith joins Calvin Harris and Rihanna with six No.1 hits in the 2010s, one behind clear leader Tinie Tempah who has had seven.

Zayn (Malik) becomes the first member of One Direction to secure three Top 10 hits outside the band, landing at No.5 (28,768 sales) with his Sia collaboration Dusk Till Dawn. Taken from his upcoming second album, it brings Zayn's overall tally of Top 75 entries to 30, of which the first 23 - including 15 Top 10 entries - were as a member of One Direction. It is Sia's 19th hit, and the 10th to make the Top 10.

Former Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello hits the Top 10 solo for the first time with Havana (feat. Young Thug) climbing 11-10 (21,881 sales). Dua Lipa's former No.1, New Rules, is runner-up for the third straight week (40,505 sales) while Taylor Swift's Look What You Made Me Do ends its two-week reign by falling to No.3 (34,938 sales).

The rest of the Top 10: What About Us (3-4, 32,936 sales) by Pink, Friends (4-6, 25,323 sales) by Justin Bieber & BloodPop, Reggaeton Lento (6-7, 23,180 sales) by CNCO & Little Mix, More Than Friends (8-8, 22,093 sales) by James Hype feat. Kelli-Leigh and Ready For It (7-9, 21,887 sales) by Taylor Swift.

Falling out of the Top 10: Mi Gente (5-11, 21,702 sales) by J Bavin & Willy William, Sorry Not Sorry (9-12, 19,814 sales) by Demi Lovato and Sun Comes Up (10-14, 18,757 sales) by Rudimental feat. James Arthur.

Peaking at No.95 in March 2016, Kelly Clarkson’s Piece By Piece revives after being performed by Rebecca Grace on The X Factor last weekend. Returning to the chart at No.27 (12.026 sales) it becomes Clarkson’s 19th Top 75 hit, and 17th Top 40 hit.

The last of just five new entries to the Top 75 this week are Cola, which fizzes 82-58 (5,742 sales) for British DJ/production duo CamelPhat and singer Elderbrook aka London-based Alexander Kotz; and On My Mind, a No.73 debut (4,732 sales) for Jorja Smith & Preditah.

1-800-273-8255 is the US telephone number of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. It is also the title of the chart's fastest moving hit, which springs 41-16 (18,088 sales) for Logic feat. Alessia Cara and Khalid. The track, which also jumped 25 places last week, is the second Top 20 hit for US rapper Logic, and Canadian singer Cara, while providing the very first hit to venture into the Top 20 for 19-year-old US singer Khalid, who is also climbing the charts as featured vocalist on Marshmello's Silence (38-34, 10,363 sales) and his first solo chart foray, Young Dumb And Broke, which debuted at No.69 last week and now climbs to No.61 (5,467 sales).

Also advancing to new peaks within the Top 75 are: Questions (16-13, 19,358 sales) by Chris Brown, Bestie (19-17, 17,786 sales) by Yungen feat. Yxng Bane, Lonely Together (35-21, 15,058 sales) by Avicii feat. Rita Ora, Hurtin’ Me (50-28, 11,549 sales) by Stefflon Don & French Montana, If I’m Lucky (32-30, 11,350 sales) by Jason Derulo. Also, Jocelyn Flores (62-42, 6,368 sales) by XXXTentacion, Unsigned (48-47, 7,304 sales) by Hardy Caprio feat. One Acen, Rihanna (65-50, 6,845 sales) by Yxng Bane, Bodak Yellow (59-52, 6,504 sales) by Cardi B, Bank Account (63-55, 6,209 sales) by 21 Savage, No Don (71-60, 5,487 sales) by Lotto Boyzz and Finders Keepers (72-64, 5,384 sales) by Mabel feat. Kojo Funds.

Overall singles sales are down 4.80% week-on-week at 12,781,372, 26.06% above same week 2016 sales of 10,139,471. Streams accounted for 11,616,377 sales, 90.89% of the total. Paid-for sales are down 4.06% week -on-week at 1,164,995, and are 24.57% below same week 2016 sales of 1,544,448. They are below same-week, previous-year sales for the 215th week in a row.

American indie band The National top the chart for the first time, with their seventh album, Sleep Well Beast, opening in pole position on sales of 20,118 copies (including 1,922 from sales-equivalent streams).

After falling short of the Top 200 with their eponymous 2001 debut and 2003's Sad Songs For Dirty Loves, the band gained a toehold on the chart for the first time in 2005, when their third album, Alligator, debuted and peaked at No.165. Boxer reached No.57 in 2007 and The National scored its first Top 10 album in 2010, when fifth album High Violet debuted and peaked at No.5. They improved again in 2013 when Trouble Will Find Me debuted and peaked at No.3 on sales of 21,034 copies. It topped the 100,000 sales mark last week but still trails High Violet, which remains their biggest seller, with a to-date tally of 126,623.

All of The National's success has come with the Beggars Banquet group, initially on the eponymous label but for the last three albums on its 4AD imprint, which achieves its very first No.1 with Sleep Well Beast some 37 years after its inception.

Almost two years after Essex alt-rock quintet Nothing But Thieves' eponymous first album debuted at number seven (8,916 sales), follow-up Broken Machine opens at No.2 (12,026 sales). Although it failed to generate any hit singles, the first Nothing But Thieves album has thus far sold 54,819 copies.

Recorded in a day in 1976 on a diet of drugs and drink, Hitchhiker is a truly solo effort from Neil Young which was turned down by his record label at the time but which now emerges to debut at No.6 (7,386 sales) to become his first Top 10 album since 2000. It is the 55th chart album in all for the 71-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter, and his 17th in the 21st century.

After reaching No.17 with their 2015 FFS collaboration with Franz Ferdinand, veteran fraternal duo Sparks’ critically acclaimed new album Hippopotamus goes higher still. Debuting at No.7 (5,597 sales) it earns the Mael brothers - Ron (72) and Russell (68) - their first Top 10 album since their back-to-back 1974 breakthrough albums Kimono My House and Propaganda, which peaked at No.4 and No.9 respectively. Sparks have released 23 studio albums and a multitude of compilations but only seven (eight if we include FFS) have charted, most recently Exotic Creatures Of The Deep, which reached No.54 in 2008. The most recent Sparks album before Hippopotamus was 2009's The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman which fell well short of the chart and has sold only 1,266 copies to date.

Another act to return to the Top 10 after a lengthy absence are The Waterboys. Led, as ever, by the enigmatic Mike Scott, they debut at No.8 (4,617 sales) with Out Of All This Blue, surpassing the No.14 debut/peak (on sales of 6,447 copies) of their last album, 2015's Modern Blues, to become their fourth Top 10 album in all and their first since 1993, when Dream Harder reached No.5.

It is the fourth week in a row that there have been five brand new entries to the Top 10 but an appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show on ITV last Saturday (September 9) for a chat and a performance of his new single, As You Are, ensured that Rag'N'Bone Man's debut album Human did not fall out of the Top 10 for the first time. Instead, it sprints 8-4 (10,294 sales) on its 32nd consecutive appearance in the top tier.

Also remaining in the Top 10 are: Divide (2-3, 11,692 sales) by Ed Sheeran, Freedom Child (1-5, 8,089 sales) by The Script, Villains (5-9, 4,489 sales) by Queens Of The Stone Age and Dua Lipa (9-10, 4,171 sales).

Meanwhile, there are exits from the Top 10 for American Dream (3-12, 3,777 sales) by LCD Soundsystem, The 50 Greatest Hits (10-17, 3,292 sales) by Elvis Presley, The Punishment Of Luxury (4-55, 1,647 sales) by OMD, Every Country’s Sun (6-61, 1,580 sales) by Mogwai and Hearts That Strain (7-62, 1,568 sales) by Jake Bugg.

Twenty-five years after singer/songwriter and pianist Tori Amos' debut album Earthquakes debuted and peaked at No.14, her 15th studio album Native Invader makes a similar No.16 debut on sales of 3,490 copies. Written and produced entirely by 54-year-old Amos, it represents a small decline against last album, Unrepentant Geraldines, which debuted and peaked at No.13 on sales of 4,614 copies in 2014. All of her albums, apart from 2009 seasonal selection Midwinter Graces, have made the Top 75, with three reaching the Top 10.

The amount of time that elapsed between the release of Amos' Unrepentant Geraldines and Native Invader is exactly the same as that between singer/songwriter Nick Mulvey's debut album, First Mind and follow-up Wake Up Now which, logically, also debuts this week at No.25 (2,662 sales). First Mind debuted and peaked at No.10 on first week sales of 5,529 copies.

Canadian band Alvvays fell short of the chart with their self-titled 2014 debut but have attracted a great deal of attention since then, a fact which doubtless contributed to the No.28 debut (2,365 sales) of second album, Antisocialites.

After three Top 10 studio albums in a row, Alter Bridge settle for lower ground with their new set Live At The O2 Arena + Rarities, which debuts at No.36 (2,020 sales).

With nine prior studio albums to their credit, dating back to 1996, Swedish death metal band Arch Enemy have always made the Top 200 but never the Top 75. That changes this week, with 10th album, Will To Power openings at No.37 (2,014 sales).

Jack Johnson's stock has fallen somewhat since he had three consecutive No.1 albums in the UK between 2005 and 2010. Four years since his sixth album, From Here To Now To You debuted and peaked at No.7 (10,445 sales), follow-up All The Light Above It Too opens at No.46 (1,856 sales).

American country star Thomas Rhett will score his third straight Top 10 album and first No.1 at home with Life Changes, which earns him his UK chart debut this week, entering at No.54 (1,652 sales).

More than 10 months after it debuted and peaked at No.6 to become his highest charting album to date, singer/songwriter Jack Savoretti's fifth studio set Sleep No More is newly available in a special edition which adds a dozen live and acoustic recordings and earn the album a re-entry at No.11 on sales of 4,138 copies, raising its cumulative tally to 96,682.

Now That's What I Call Music! 97 remains well clear at the top of the compilation chart for the eight week in a row, with a further 14,905 sales boosting its to-date total to 496,443.

Overall album sales are down 7.74% week-on-week at 1,453,946, 4.27% below same week 2016 sales of 1,518,758. Streaming accounted for 698,582 sales – 48.05% of the total. Sales of paid-for albums are down 7.05% week-on-week at 755,364, 23.16% below same week 2016 sales of 982,994. It is their lowest level since Millward Brown started compiling market data for OCC in 1994.
